Max Wainwright originally from Cheshire now based in the Peak District with partner Chelsea and dog/running partner Jac. A qualified Mountain Leader and Navigation instructor Max joined the Royal Marines at the age of 16 and he passed Commando training to join 45 Commando in Scotland. This is where he found his love of the mountains, conducting yearly mountain training in the Cairngorms, West Coast of Scotland and North Wales also passing ‘the hills’ in the Brecon Beacons. During his time in the Marines he completed 3 Norway arctic training deployments and 2 operational tours of Afghanistan.
Before leaving the marines in 2012 Max completed his RYA Yacht master course in Poole and his PADI Specialty Diving Instructor courses in the Philippines. He then moved to South East Asia to work as a diving instructor also obtaining his SSI Diving Instructor qualification. At the beginning of 2013 after seeing a job for a dive instructor in Iceland Max moved to Reykjavik where he worked for a year with Arctic Adventures. Returning briefly to the UK he found his new love of fell running and Mountain Marathons, competing in numerous events across the country and especially enjoying anything with a navigational element. In 2015 heading back to Iceland for a few more seasons Max worked for Borea Adventures in the West Fjords guiding multiday hiking trips across remote Hornstrandir, kayaking the Western Fjords and backcountry ski touring.
On fully committing to a return to the UK in 2017 Max fully threw himself into fell running, mountain marathons and Sky Running. Competing in events such as Peris Horseshoe, Marmot Dark Mountains & Glen Coe Skyline collecting some podium positions and even some wins along the way.
Now….
With his background in the Marines and working in mountains all over the world he’s dedicating his time to sharing his love of the mountains and especially his love of navigation and the opportunities it opens to everyone.
He loves to take people off the beaten path whether that’s in his beloved North Wales, Scotland or of course his new home in the Peak District. He has taken many people up the Llanberris path and along the great ridge above Edale and he will continue to do so, but please let him take you off the beaten path so you can also experience the empty trails and explore more.
